Scientists from the Poznań University of Life Sciences found dietary supplements may help obese people lose weight.

Obesity is a disease that poses a serious problem for the entire world population. It is a common, serious, and costly chronic disease of adults and children.

A weight that is higher than what is considered healthy for a given height is described as overweight or obese.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool for overweight and obesity.

BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can indicate high body fat.

If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range.

Obesity increases the risk of several debilitating, and deadly diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.

Prevention and treatments for obesity include changing eating habits and increasing physical activity.

Previous research found that the use of certain dietary supplements also brings beneficial results in reducing excess body weight. There are many options for the treatment of obesity available on the market.

In the current study, researchers aimed to review published findings about dietary supplements in the treatment of excess body weight.

They found dietary supplements that support weight loss include capsaicin, bitter orange, white bean seeds, green coffee, berberine, and single and multi-strain probiotics.

Some of these supplements have additional health benefits.

For example, bitter orange has antioxidant and anti-ulcer properties. Berberine improves lipid metabolism and reduces blood glucose levels.

Capsaicin has been used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Supplements that do not significantly reduce body weight are chitosan and vitamin D.

Chitosan can reduce blood pressure, while vitamin D improves the sensitivity of tissue to insulin.

The team also found that an increase in body mass index (BMI) is linked to an increased risk of many diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and certain cancers.

Based on the review, the researchers suggest that dietary supplements with beneficial effects which support weight loss can be used to treat obesity and its complications.

The research was published in Acta Scientiarum Polonorum, Technologia Alimentaria, and conducted by Natalia Wawrzyniak et al.
