In a recent investigation from The George Institute for Global Health, researchers explored how certain food components, specifically omega-3 fatty acids from seafood, can impact kidney health.
In simple terms, they found that eating more seafood could potentially lower the risk of chronic kidney disease and slow down the decline of kidney function.
Understanding Kidney Health
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a severe health condition affecting about 700 million people globally.
In this condition, the kidneys, which help clean the blood, slowly stop working over time. This can lead to kidney failure and even death.
Therefore, finding ways to prevent this disease is crucial. Researchers believe that omega-3 fatty acids, common in seafood, could be a key component in maintaining kidney health.

Uncovering the Seafood Connection
In this particular study, scientists took a closer look at 19 different studies from 12 countries, conducted until May 2020, involving more than 25,000 participants aged between 49 and 77.
They aimed to discover any connections between the levels of omega-3 fatty acids and the development of chronic kidney disease in adults. Out of all the participants, 4,944 (19%) developed CKD.
Researchers were interested in different types of omega-3 fatty acids, including those found in seafood (EPA, DHA, and DPA) and those found in plants (ALA).
They discovered that higher levels of seafood-derived omega-3 fatty acids were connected to an 8% lower risk of developing CKD.
Moreover, individuals with the highest levels of these fatty acids had a 13% lower risk compared to those with the lowest levels.
Especially DHA, one of the omega-3s found in seafood, was linked to a slower decline in kidney function.
However, they didn’t find any such positive associations with the plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid, ALA. This means, the benefits seem to be specifically related to the omega-3s found in seafood.

These findings reinforce current health advice, suggesting that incorporating adequate seafood, especially oily fish, into our diets can be beneficial.
Choosing seafood over less healthy food options can particularly help in fostering better kidney health.
