Researchers from Vanderbilt University have discovered that a diet rich in fiber and yogurt is linked to a lower risk of lung cancer.

This study, published in JAMA Oncology, adds to the growing evidence of the health benefits of high-fiber and yogurt-rich diets, previously known for their positive impact on cardiovascular disease and gastrointestinal cancer.

The study analyzed data from 1.4 million adults across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Participants were divided into five groups based on their fiber and yogurt consumption.

Remarkably, those who consumed the most yogurt and fiber had a 33% lower risk of developing lung cancer compared to those who consumed the least amount of fiber and did not eat yogurt.

This significant finding supports the 2015-2020 US Dietary Guidelines, which recommend a diet high in fiber and yogurt.

The study’s results were consistent across various demographics, including current, past, and never smokers, as well as men, women, and individuals from different backgrounds.

The researchers suggest that the health benefits observed may be due to the prebiotic and probiotic properties of fiber and yogurt.

These properties can positively influence gut microbiota, either independently or together, promoting a healthier gut environment.

This study highlights the importance of diet in reducing the risk of serious diseases like lung cancer. It suggests that simple dietary changes, such as increasing fiber and yogurt intake, can have a significant impact on lung health and potentially lower the risk of lung cancer.

For individuals concerned about lung health, incorporating more fiber and yogurt into their diet could be a proactive step towards prevention.

This research also underscores the interconnectedness of diet and overall health, emphasizing the role of gut health in disease prevention.

In conclusion, the Vanderbilt University study offers a compelling case for considering dietary habits as part of a comprehensive approach to health and disease prevention, particularly in reducing the risk of lung cancer.
