Scientists from Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Training & Research Hospital found that Vitamin A and vitamin C are linked to COVID-19 severity.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and an essential nutrient for humans. It is a group of organic compounds that includes retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, and several provitamins A carotenoids.
Vitamin C plays a role in controlling infections and healing wounds and is a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize harmful free radicals.
In the current study, researchers aimed to examine the association between the body levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin C and the severity of COVID-19.
They examined 53 people who tested COVID-19 positive. Blood samples for Vitamin A and C levels were drawn from all participants upon admission.
The team also tested a group of healthy volunteers for comparison.
The link between body levels of these vitamins and COVID-19 severity was also tested.
The team found in COVID-19 patients, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C levels were much lower compared with healthy people.
According to the results of correlation analyses, there was a strong association between Vitamin A levels and COVID-19 outcome measures. Higher vitamin A levels were linked to less severe COVID-19 outcomes.
The link between higher Vitamin C levels and lower COVID-19 severity was even more prominent.
Based on the findings, the team concludes that COVID-19 patients had lower Vitamin A and Vitamin C levels as compared to healthy people.
In people with COVID-19, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C levels were linked to reduced COVID-19 severity.
The research was published in Acta Biomedica, and conducted by Gulseren Yilmaz et al.
